As we all know, science and technology promote social development and process. And it is constant development of human knowledge that ensures the development of science and technology. However, there is a very common phenomenon that students having received higher education solely focus on advanced knowledge and practical skills but do not care about knowledge or theories themselves, especially liberal arts. In my perspective, however, higher education is supposed to concentrate on student's affection and attention on humanities and spiritual cultivation.

On one hand, humanities and spiritual education have various advantages for students' formation. Students who have received higher education generally tend to be the men of tremendous promise for the society, which means that they should have command of knowledge of art, history, and humanity. On the other hand, studying with the sole pragmatic purpose is likely to drive students to run after profits only in their future career, which tends to result in them losing themselves.

In conclusion, higher education should pay more attention to the cultivation of humanity instead of emphasizing pragmatic skills only.

  • [冠词错误] 冠词缺失,建议改为on one hand改为on the one hand
究竟是用one one hand还是on the one hand呢?为此我们查询了朗文词典、牛津词典。牛津只给出了“on the one hand... on the other hand ”;朗文为:“Do not say 'on one hand'. Say on the one hand. ”

题目:My Opinion on the Function of Higher Education

要求:

The 26th American President Theodore Roosevelt once said, "If we educate a man's mind but not his heart, we have an educated barbarian."  A real educated man should fall in love with the humanities.  The term "educated barbarian" is not self contradictory.

Nowadays there is a sad truth that a lot of college students are "educated barbarians" who have received years of education but ended up having no affection for knowledge, especially the branches in liberal arts. Staying in college solely for pragmatic purposes, they are never truly involved in knowledge.

Write a composition based on the above information, expressing your opinion on the function of higher education. You should write at least 150 words but no more than 300 words.
